What did Lisandro Martínez say about Manchester United’s Champions League quality after the Atlético de Madrid loss?
Lisandro Martínez’s post-match comments were blunt: after Manchester United lost 2-0 to Atlético de Madrid, he said the squad was not at Champions League quality.
What Martínez said
Martínez criticized Manchester United’s current level after the Champions League defeat at the Metropolitano. According to the reports, Atlético scored in the first minute and later extended the lead through Lookman.
Asked about United’s situation, Martínez said the team was not at the level required for the Champions League. That is the key point: his criticism was not just about one bad result, but about the squad’s overall standard in that competition.
What he said about responsibility
Martínez also suggested the issue should not be placed only on the coach or the players. He indicated that Michael Carrick was doing what he could, while saying the club needed to look beyond the coaching staff and squad when assigning responsibility.
That matters because his comments pointed toward broader recruitment and club-building questions, not simply tactics from one match.
What is confirmed so far
The confirmed details are limited to the post-match remarks reported after the 2-0 loss. The reports do not include a full club response, a specific recruitment plan, or any confirmed transfer decision tied to Martínez’s comments.
For any follow-up from Manchester United, it is worth checking the club’s latest official communication rather than assuming these remarks will lead directly to action.
Why did Lisandro Martínez say Manchester United needed more summer investment?
Lisandro Martínez said Manchester United needed more summer investment because, in his view, the squad was not at Champions League level after the 2-0 loss to Atlético de Madrid.
The direct answer
When asked whether Manchester United needed more investment in the summer, Martínez answered yes. His reasoning was tied to the team’s level: he said the squad was not good enough for Champions League competition as currently built.
That makes his point more about squad construction than one isolated performance.
What kind of problem was he pointing to?
The reports frame Martínez’s comments as criticism of Manchester United’s recruitment and wider club situation. He did not only blame the match result on the players on the pitch.
He also suggested people should look beyond Michael Carrick and the squad when talking about responsibility. In other words, Martínez appeared to be saying the problem sits higher up than one coach or one lineup.
What this does not confirm
His comments do not confirm any specific transfer target, spending amount, or official club plan. They only confirm that Martínez publicly backed the idea that more summer investment was needed.
Because club plans can change quickly, readers should look for Manchester United’s official announcements before treating any future recruitment claim as confirmed.
