What does the new Sense and Sensibility adaptation change about the tone of Jane Austen’s story?
The main change, as described by First Things, is not a plot detail but a change in interpretation. Georgia Oakley’s Sense and Sensibility adaptation is presented as visually warm and pleasant to watch, yet more tragic in how it understands Jane Austen’s story.
The tone shifts from comic possibility to tragedy
First Things argues that Austen’s original story has a comic worldview. In that reading, disappointment does not simply close off the future. Failed hopes, broken attachments, and changed plans can become the start of a different kind of happiness.
The new adaptation, according to the piece, leans away from that pattern. It treats the emotional losses in Sense and Sensibility as more tragic, rather than emphasizing the way Austen turns pain into renewed possibility.
What the review still praises
The criticism is not that the film is unpleasant to watch. The article describes the adaptation as enjoyable and notes its warm, soft visual style. It also says the movie was shot on film.
So the issue is mainly tonal. First Things sees a gap between the film’s appealing surface and what the writer believes is missing underneath: Austen’s comic sense that life can change after disappointment.
The practical takeaway
If you are wondering how the Sense and Sensibility adaptation tone differs from Austen’s, the short answer is this: First Things says the film looks warm but interprets the story more tragically than Austen’s comic worldview allows.
Why does the First Things piece say the Sense and Sensibility adaptation misses Austen’s comic worldview?
First Things says the new Sense and Sensibility misses Austen’s comic worldview because it does not fully capture the way her story turns disappointment into future possibility.
The review’s main criticism
The piece argues that Austen’s story is not simply about suffering through romantic loss. In the First Things reading, the novel repeatedly shows that a painful setback can lead to changed circumstances, second attachments, and a renewed path forward.
That is what the article means by Austen’s comic worldview. “Comic” here does not mean that everything is constantly funny. It means the story has a pattern of recovery, redirection, and restored possibility.
How the adaptation differs
According to the article, Georgia Oakley’s adaptation is enjoyable and visually warm, but it interprets the story in a more tragic direction. The review suggests that this emphasis makes the adaptation less faithful to the deeper movement of Austen’s work.
The criticism is therefore about meaning, not just mood. First Things sees the film as soft and attractive on the surface, while missing the comic shape the writer finds central to Austen.
Bottom line
The First Things Sense and Sensibility review says the adaptation falls short because it treats disappointment more as tragedy than as the beginning of changed possibilities, which the piece sees as essential to Austen’s vision.
